CADS New Adaptive Snow Sports Technical Manual and New Instructors’ Certification Program
A fundamental pillar of the CADS organization is their Instructors’ Certification Program. It provides the structure for the training and certification of CADS instructors who deliver the on-snow instruction to the skiers.
In June 2016 CADS announced their goal of doubling the size of its current group of Level 3’s and Course Conductors over the next two years. CADS is planning to run within each Division or region some courses specifically focused on supporting Level 2 instructors who seek to elevate their skills to a Level 3, in anticipation of then achieving their Level 3 Course Conductor certification.
In October 2015, CADS introduced their new Instruction Certification Program. Central to the certification program is the Adaptive Snowsports Technical Manual. The CADS Technical Committee introduced the new manual at the autumn 2015 pre-courses. It details the adaptive teaching techniques that allow the students to become successful skiing and snowboarding participants. It is being provided to all Course Conductors. The English and French manual are available for purchase at a cost of $5.00 per copy
You may arrange to purchase a copy of the CADS Instruction Manual by contacting the CADS Managing Director, Mr. Christian Hrab at Christian@disabledskiing.ca
The new approach is consistent, across Canada, with CSIA & CASI methodology, Alpine Canada Long Term Skier Development, and supported by an improved, up-to-date CADS instructor manual. It encourages succession planning for Course Conductors, Examiners, and Senior Examiners.
The full certification now adds two new sections to the certification process. There is a new cost structure. Instructors now have the choice to take and pass their certification either;
By pursuing the new
modules,
or
In a full certification course (as was done in the
past).
All current CADS instructors with Level 1, Level 2 and or Level 2A have two years to complete new modules to retain their full certification. There are no CADS certification fees for instructors in these cases. Volunteers are allowed to teach if trained properly and under the supervision of a qualified instructor.
First: A New Modular Approach to Level 1 and Level II Certification
Additional instruction has been added to Level I and Level II Certification. These levels can be taken as full courses or by modules. The modules focus on:
- 3-Track / 4-Track Module (3&4T)
- Visually Impaired Module (VI)
- Sit-ski Module (SS)
- NEW! Autism Spectrum Disorder/ Cognitively Impaired Module (ASD/CI) interaction
In order to achieve each level of full certification, all of the modules for the level must be passed. If an instructor does not complete all of the modules in a given level, he or she will be considered a specialist in the module(s) they have passed. Moreover, participants will not be able to advance to the next level of full certification until all of the modules at the current level are successfully completed. However, it will be possible for that person to access some modules of the next level. Indeed, being a specialist in level 1 (eg sitski) can apply for sitski module level 2 and become a specialist level 2 sitski.
Second: CADS Simplified their Certification Levels and Certification Requirements
New Certification Levels are as follows:
- Level I Instructor
- Level II Instructor
- Level III Instructor
- Level III Course Conductor
- Level IV Instructor
- Level IV Examiner
There will no longer be a Level IIA Certification. Current Level
IIA
Instructors are encouraged to complete the remaining Level II
Modules (ASD/CI), and to pursue Level III certification.
New Level III and Level IV Instructor certification requirements ensure that senior instructors have broad skills and experience and become CADS ambassador.
New Level III Course Conductor and Level IV certification requirements ensure that those delivering certification courses are effective, competent teachers and ambassador.
Third: New CADS Course Fees
CADS Course Fees are $50 for a full course, $20 per module, $5 for the electronic manual in PDF format, and $25 + shipping for hard colored copy of the manual (optional – available on request).
The CADS course fee reflects the cost of developing and maintaining the certification program and manual over time. All participants are required to purchase a manual, either in electronic PDF format or hard colored copy. The manual contains information for all modules, and all levels, and need only be purchased once. Divisions may charge additional course fees to cover expenses related to courses.
